Does Silver Sponge Media Contain Crystalline Silica?

Contractors and Facility owners recognize the health hazards and liability that sandblasting abrasives can create. One major concern is long term exposure to silica dust, and its dire health consequences such as silicosis and lung cancer.

Sponge-Jet Silver Media used for coating removal, cleaning and profiling metal does not contain any detectable Crystalline Silica. Additionally, the use of Sponge-Jet Media lowers emissions up to 98% from hazards in the coating or substrate being blasted.

Unfortunately when thinking about silica exposure, people often forget to consider the surface being blasted and just worry about the blast media. Crystalline Silica's Permissible Exposure Limits (PEL) threshold are usually exceeded when using garnet and coal slag while blasting concrete or other masonry substrates. Sponge Media's unique micro-containment features will reduce airborne silica dust generated when surfaces like brick and concrete are blasted.

Proper PPE should be worn at all times while abrasive blasting.
